This work of art is titled "Self-portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird" by Frida Kahlo. This painting was made in 1940, and shook history.  In this work  in particular, she portrays her own pain, making a representation of Christ's crown hung like a necklace in relation to her pain after her recent divorce.
Khalo put many symbolic features in this painting. She used these symbols to express her feelings. The bird is a representation of freedom and life. The black humming bird is supposed to represent Khalo's lifeless feelings and sadness. The black cat is suspected to represent bad luck.
I love the all of  the meaning behind the painting. The expression on her face is piercingly emotionless. I like how she used many different symbols to represent many different situations. Khalo is a very talented artist that uses symbols in all of the work she creates. This work in particular is one of my favorites just due to the fact it is very personal and you can almost feel and relate to her pain.
Khalo creates works of art that either political or personal. In almost every work  you have to question what it is she is representing which is what keeps me interested. She always seems to have  this calmness about her paintings. It is almost like she is calm while enduring all of the pain and hurt in her life mentally and physically.
